When to go

When is the best time to see crocodiles?

All year. Sunny mornings in the dry season, December to April, are best, when crocs haul out on the sandbanks to warm up and the rivers are low.

Why a guide matters

How guides get you close safely

From the bridge you'll see crocs. A good boat guide gets you more by:

  • Knowing the sandbanks and channels each croc uses, often for years.
  • Reading the tide and water level, which decide where crocs bask.
  • Keeping the boat at a safe distance and everyone's hands inside.
  • Never feeding crocs to bring them closer.

Not sure where to go? Send us your dates and where you're staying, and we'll suggest the right guide.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Best light is the first two hours after sunrise, when crocs bask with their mouths open.

Ethical wildlife watching

Calm, factual and safe

Is it safe to swim and surf?

Yes, on most beaches. Attacks are rare, and almost all happen at or near river mouths, often at dawn, dusk or after heavy rain. Ask locals and lifeguards, and look for warning signs.

Never swim in rivers or estuaries, and keep kids and pets away from the water's edge.

Short answer: no

Is it legal to feed them?

No, and it is dangerous. Fed crocodiles learn to approach people and boats. Choose tours whose guides never feed them.

Never pay to hold or pose with a baby crocodile. Real rescue centres don't offer it.

Myths and edge cases

Alligators, ocean crocs and the Tárcoles bridge

There are no alligators in Costa Rica. The American crocodile does swim in the sea and moves between river mouths along the coast, which is why it sometimes turns up on beaches.

The Tárcoles bridge is free and safe. Crocs gather on the sandbanks below. Watch from the walkway, never from the riverbank.

Males bellow and slap the water in the dry season.

How we rank guides and operators

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are there alligators in Costa Rica?

No. Costa Rica has the American crocodile and the spectacled caiman. Many locals call crocodiles "lagartos", which adds to the confusion.

Does Lyferr run the tours?

No. Lyferr is a marketplace. Licensed local guides and tour operators list their tours here, and we rank them by sighting success, reviews and client experience (and photography expertise for photo tours). You book and pay the deposit through Lyferr, and the operator you choose runs the tour.

Are there crocodiles at the beach?

Sometimes, near river mouths. Crocs swim along the coast between rivers. Most beaches are fine; avoid swimming near estuaries, especially at dawn and dusk.

Is it safe to surf in Tamarindo, Jacó or Nosara?

Generally yes, away from the river mouths. Ask local surf schools which breaks have had croc sightings this season.

What time of day are crocodiles most active?

They bask in the morning sun and hunt at dusk and at night.

How much does a crocodile boat tour cost?

Group river tours cost about $35 to $65 per person and last about two hours. Every tour on Lyferr shows its price before you book.

Can you see crocodiles from the Tárcoles bridge?

Yes, almost every day. The bridge is on Route 34, about 1.5 hours from San José. Watch from the walkway and mind the traffic.

How big do crocodiles get in Costa Rica?

Large males on the Tárcoles River reach about 4 to 5 m. Most crocs you see are 2 to 3 m.

Is it legal to feed crocodiles?

No. Feeding wildlife is illegal in Costa Rica, and fed crocs learn to approach people.

What are crocodiles called in Spanish?

Cocodrilo, though many Ticos say lagarto. The caiman is the caimán or babilla.
