  • Go out at night

Sarapiquí is frog country. A night tour finds far more than a day walk.

  • Combine boat and trail

A river boat in the morning and a reserve walk in the afternoon covers both habitats.

  • Bring rain gear

It rains here in every month. A light jacket and quick-dry clothes help.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographing wildlife in Sarapiquí

Low light under a tall canopy. Here is when the light works, where to stand and what to pack.

SHOT LIST · ODDS FOR OCTOBER

PLAN THE SHOT

Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.

Light is soft and dim under the forest. The early birding walk at 5:45 am and the late afternoon give the best activity. Rain usually falls at night and in the morning, so plan for wet starts.

FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR

Rain is part of the deal here. Frogs and birds are most active right after a shower, so pack a light rain jacket and keep walking.
