PLAN THE SHOT
Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.
Arrive for the 7:00 opening. Animals are most active in the cool early hours, before the heat and the tour groups. The beaches close at 15:00.
The main trail and the beaches of Manuel Antonio and Espadilla Sur give the most variety. Cathedral Point joins the two beaches.
Sloths often sit high in the canopy, so bring a 100 to 400 mm zoom. Pack a rain cover from May to November.
STARTING POINT
Sloth in shade: 1/500 s, f/5.6, ISO 1600 to 3200. Frog at night: 1/200 s, f/8, ISO 400 with soft light.
Drones need a special permit. Do not feed the monkeys, and keep snacks in the free lockers at the entrance.
FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR
Be at the gate when it opens at 7. The first hour on the main trail is the quietest, and sloths and monkeys are easiest to find before the crowds.
