WHAT'S NEAR YOU
What you can reach from Drake Bay
There are almost no roads here. Times are by boat or on foot from the centre of Drake Bay, and boat times change with the sea.

1. Río Agujitas
5 min on footRiverHerons and iguanasA calm river at the edge of the village. Kayak it around high tide, as it gets too shallow at low water.
2. San Pedrillo station
30 to 45 min by boatCorcovado NPMonkeys and birdsThe closest Corcovado ranger station to Drake Bay. A guided loop of about 3 km leads through old forest to a waterfall.
3. Caño Island
50 min by boatMarine reserveSnorkellingSome of the clearest water in the country. Snorkel and dive numbers are limited, so book ahead.
4. Coastal trail to San Josecito
2 h 30 on footCoastal trailMonkeys and beachesStarts at the hanging bridge over Río Agujitas and passes small coves. Most people walk out and take a boat back.
5. Sirena station
1 h 30 to 2 h 30 by boatCorcovado NPTapir, peccariesThe heart of Corcovado and the best chance of Baird's tapir, usually at dawn or dusk. Guide only. Closed every October.

PLAN THE SHOT
Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.
Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk. The bird chorus at Sirena starts around 4:30 am. Paddle Río Agujitas in the morning, near high tide.
The best spots are Sirena for tapir, peccaries and monkeys, San Pedrillo for its waterfall trail, Río Agujitas for herons and iguanas, and the boat ride to Caño Island for dolphins and, in season, whales.
Pack dry bags for every camera and lens. Landings are often on the beach. A mid-range zoom is easier than a big prime on a moving boat.
STARTING POINT
Sloth in shade: 1/500 s, f/5.6, ISO 1600 to 3200. Frog at night: 1/200 s, f/8, ISO 400 with soft light.
Corcovado can only be visited with a guide, a rule in force since 2014. Never feed wildlife. At Caño Island nothing may be taken from the sea, dead or alive.
FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR
Walk slowly near the river mouths at Sirena. Tapirs rest in the mud there, and you often smell them before you see them.
