WHAT'S NEAR YOU

What you can reach from Tortuguero

There are no roads in Tortuguero. Times are on foot or by boat from the village, and everything for a short stay sits inside the first rings.

River boat inWildlife on the way

There are no roads, so you arrive by boat. Watch for crocodiles, monkeys and herons along the river.

  • Book turtle tours early

In nesting season, night turtle tours have limited spots and must go with a guide certified by the ICT.

  • Take the first canal tour

Wildlife is busiest at sunrise, and paddle or electric boats get closer and stay quieter.

  • Pack boots and rain gear

Tortuguero is one of the wettest places in the country, and the park trail is often flooded.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographing wildlife in Tortuguero

Shoot the canals by day, not the turtles by night. Here is when the light works, where to stand and what to pack.

SHOT LIST · ODDS FOR OCTOBER

PLAN THE SHOT

Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.

Take a canal boat at first light, when the park opens at 6:00. Birds are active and the water is calm.

FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR

Wildlife lives along the canals, so the boat matters more than the trail. Go out at dawn, when caimans, herons and monkeys are most active.
