FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographing wildlife in La Fortuna

Low light under the canopy, fast subjects and night macro. Here's when the light works at each spot, what to bring, and the photo guides who know La Fortuna.

SHOT LIST · ODDS FOR OCTOBER

PLAN THE SHOT

Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.

Soft light from 6 to 9 am at Bogarín, 7 to 10 am at canopy level on the Místico bridges, and 8 to 10 am on the Arenal lava trails before the haze. Night walks from 6 to 9 pm are for macro.

FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR

Most people look for sloths in the wrong place. At six in the morning, scan the cecropia trees on the forest edge, where the sun hits first.
