FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographing wildlife in Liberia and Rincón de la Vieja

Dry forest, hard light, start at dawn. Here is when the light works, where to stand and what to pack.

SHOT LIST · ODDS FOR OCTOBER

PLAN THE SHOT

Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.

Shoot early. Midday light is harsh in the dry forest. December to April is the dry season, and March brings the lowest water at Palo Verde, with birds and crocodiles packed into the remaining pools.

FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR

In the dry season, sit by the last water in the forest at dawn. Much of the wildlife comes to drink.
