WHEN TO COME

San José, month by month

San José is a base for day trips. Scarlet macaws live at Carara all year and crocodiles gather under the Tárcoles bridge. The dry months make the trails easier, and spring is quetzal nesting season in the hills.

  • Leave before 6 am

Traffic out of the city is heavy. An early start saves time and catches the morning birds.

  • Book Poás in advance

Poás tickets are sold online for set time slots, and clouds often cover the crater by late morning.

  • One trip a day

Every spot here is an hour or more away. One park per day is plenty.
