WHEN TO COME

Tamarindo, month by month

Crocodiles and herons live in the Tamarindo estuary all year. In the dry months wildlife gathers at the water, and the leatherback season runs from late October to mid February, though these turtles are now rare.

TAMARINDO AT A GLANCE

GETTING HERE
4 to 5 h by road
About 260 km from San José on Route 27 and Route 1 to Liberia, then Route 21 via Santa Cruz. About 1.5 h from Liberia airport.
WEATHER
22 to 33 °C
Dry from December to April. Rains start in May, and September and October are the wettest months.
PROTECTED AREA
Las Baulas Marine National Park
A Ramsar site that covers the Tamarindo estuary, its mangroves and the leatherback beach at Playa Grande.
PARK HOURS
6 am to 6 pm
From 20 Oct to 15 Feb the nesting beaches close at 5 pm. Night visits are only with a guide, in groups of up to 15.

ESTUARY TOURS: Timed by the tide. Boats leave from the river mouth at the north end of town. There is no dock, so you wade in shin deep to board. Leatherbacks at Las Baulas fell from about 1,500 nesting females a season in 1988-89 to between 68 and 188 by 2003. Treat a nesting sighting as rare.

  • Take the estuary at high tide

Mangrove boats go furthest at high tide, when the channels are full.

  • Turtle nights are rare here now

Leatherbacks rarely nest at Playa Grande now. Ostional, about 2 hours south, is a better bet in season.

  • Start early in the dry season

From December to April the heat builds fast. Wildlife is busiest before about 9 am.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photographing wildlife in Tamarindo

Low boats, high tides, no turtle photos. Here is when the light works, where to stand and what to pack.

SHOT LIST · ODDS FOR OCTOBER

PLAN THE SHOT

Sunrise is between about 5:15 and 6 am and sunset between about 5:15 and 6 pm, depending on the month.

estuary trips run with the higher tides, so the start time moves day to day. Ask for an early or late departure for softer light and cooler air.

FIELD TIP FROM LYFERR

Time the estuary boat with the tide. At high tide the boat reaches deeper into the mangroves, where crocodiles and herons rest.
